What would we be without social media? Probably better people!

For young millennials and generation Z, social media takes a big place in our life, while probably being one of the most important things to have. However, it seems that it is becoming a little too big and some of us should reconsider if social media is impacting our mental health.

Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook can easily be found on each of our phones, but our daily consumptions depend on how bad social media affects us. Today, bullying is more found online, rather than during recess in high school, which is terrible. Finding your soulmate or simply your next boyfriend happens more on Tinder, than in actual real life, which is quite disappointing and I hate it. However, I did find my current boyfriend on Tinder, but it is probably something I will never do again because of that awkward first date!

Unfortunately, it seems that we cannot even have a private life because everything is exposed or simply posted on social media. For example, when you go out, you instantly have the need to post a ‘’story’’ on your Instagram to let everyone know that tonight is the night to get drunk, but honestly, no one cares! Posting, posting and posting is becoming a necessity, instead of simply wanting to do it. You may think this one girl you follow on Instagram is gorgeous, until you see her in the metro and realize that she isn’t that pretty because of Photoshop and filters. It has come to a point where we cannot even have dinner with our loved ones because all they do is check their emails and spend time stalking people on social media, which is more common than we think, the stalking part, not emails!

I cannot stress this enough, but what has our generation truly become? Spending time with your grand-parents who are about to die is hard enough because letting go of your phone gives you anxiety. However, what actually stresses you out and gives you anxiety is what is found on your phone and letting it go might help you more than anything. Personally, I have tried to let go of social media, but all I do when I am bored is scroll through Instagram, instead of reading a book, or simply educating myself on what is happening in our world. It seems that the random girl who got pregnant is more important than climate change, which is extremely disappointing, but unfortunately, a major reality. We would rather share a Facebook post about our oceans dying, than simply picking up the waste we see on our Montreal sidewalks on our way home from work. Our generation does not actually do anything to help one another besides liking, commenting and sharing posts on the different social media platforms and honestly, I am hurt just talking about this.

In general, we all know and understand that social media takes a big place in our life, but my question is, what would we be without social media?
